Flying Horse Farms, where camp is good medicine! Flying Horse Farms is a magical, transforming and fun camp for children with serious illnesses, and their families.  Situated on 195 acres in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, it is designed to inspire children to reach beyond their conditions through safe adventures at no charge to the campers’ families. The camp will provide year-round experiences at our facility scheduled to open in fall 2010. Flying Horse Farms will serve up to 2,500 children of all ages and their families each year. The camp will serve children with arthritis, severe asthma, cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, heart disease, hemophilia and related blood disorders and sickle cell disease. The 24-hour on-site medical facility will be staffed by volunteer doctors and nurses from area children’s hospitals. Children can receive treatments, daily infusions or medications, allowing thousands of children to attend camp who otherwise would be unable. There are over 16,000 children in Ohio with serious illnesses that could benefit from this camp. Flying Horse Farms is proud to have all eight children’s hospitals in Ohio as hospital partners. They will be instrumental in referring campers and volunteer doctors and nurses. Children who attend Flying Horse Farms experience camp like an ordinary child. For one magical week, they step outside of their sickness to experience activities such as canoeing, swimming, horseback-riding, arts & crafts, and much more. Our campers return home transformed. They remember what it is like to be a child and forget what it is like to be a patient. Flying Horse Farms is currently a provisional member of the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps. We are following a set of guidelines that will lead to full membership upon the opening of our camp. These requirements are designed to assure that each member camp provides the highest level of safety and programming for the children. They are also designed to assure that each member camp has sound financial support. At this time the Association of Hole in the Wall Camps is assisting Flying Horse Farms to meet the necessary requirements.
